THE NEW GENERATION QUEENS
This documentary examines the history and culture around women's soccer in Zanzibar. It follows the only women's soccer team (at the time), the New Generation Queens, as they navigate the intersection of sports, religion, and being female.
Though Islam itself does not forbid woman from playing soccer, many Zanzibaris interpret women's soccer as "immoral" on religious grounds. For this reason, the New Generation Queens face opposition from their families and communities. Despite these hurdles they play on. These players are truly badass and will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Directed by Megan Shutzer and filmed by Kate Tygielski. I provided photography, video interviews, b-roll, brand design, and web design.
